《Pull the camera back more... Now it’s near the retina.》 recalls that the camera is closer to the eye and retina of the one who films, rather than to the subject being filmed. In a 3D environment, the artist pulls the virtual camera deep into the eye, capturing the ontological trembling that lies beyond the gaze.... That is why Kim Rui cultivates the lens—as a tool of understanding—within her own body. To understand the world through a third eye. The camera and computer function as agents of sensation for the artist, but they are also regarded as extensions of the body—more intimate, more familiar than anything else within the frame. As a form of asexual reproduction, this mechanical-sensory organ is gestated within the bodies of those who engage with Rui’s gaze. The trembling of the screen is not motion sickness. As the artist says, “It’s not nausea—it’s morning sickness.”
